A graphics graduate from the Faculty of Architecture at the Białystok University of Technology, won the Student Prize category in the 'Alter Ego' competition organized in the United States.

The award-winning linocut NGC 1027 by Anna Szkobodzińska is part of her diploma work created in the studio of the university’s Dr. Tomasz M. Kukawski. The Polish artist's work is presented at The BLANC Art Space in New York. It was also used to promote the exhibition on social media.

The works were made in the linocut technique, both were part of the graphic bachelor's work Open Clusters. The series included six 80 x 61 cm linocuts and 40 much smaller monotypes - photos measuring 10 x 15 cm. 'It took a lot of time to do all this work, but I think it was worth it', says Szkobodzińska.

For the exhibition in New York, the organizers have also printed 40 copies of the linocut photo, which are for sale. Szkobodzińska admits that she did not expect such success, and that she creates her works 'basically from what she feels'. She adds that she is 'not yet fully aware of how others experience these works'.

The unique character of his BA student's linocut was noticed by Dr. Kukawski who persuaded her to submit a linocut to the competition.

Szkobodzińska was also qualified for the biennial of graphic arts in Romania, together with two other students. Another student - Ewa Kozłowska - will show her work at the biennial in Taiwan, one of the largest in the world.

Szkobodzińska, who received her degree in April 2024, said that she had been encouraged to study graphics by her Polish teacher at secondary school.

Graphics is one of the few artistic fields of study in Podlasie. According to Szkobodzińska, during her studies, the most interesting subject for her was graphic design, and the time spent in the studio triggered her 'desire to create using various techniques'. The winner of the competition recommends graphic design studies to all those who are 'still looking for their path, but know that they want to find fulfilment in artistic fields'.
