Vice-President of the Polish Academy of Sciences, Professor Dariusz Jemielniak, has been appointed to the Board of the European Institute of Innovation and Technology (EIT). The Board is appointed by the European Commission.
The European Institute of Innovation & Technology is a European Union institute whose main objective is to promote innovation and technological development in Europe.
The EIT Board consists of 15 members - professionals in the fields of education, research and business. They are appointed by the European Commission for a four-year term. Five new members of the Board, including Professor Jemielniak, were appointed In July.
The EIT Board has several tasks. It sets the institute's strategic directions, and selects and monitors its Knowledge and Innovation Communities (KICs), i.e. European networks that address specific social challenges (including sustainable energy, climate change, healthy food and green transport). KICs bring together universities, research centres, companies, investors, as well as public institutions and NGOs.
The EIT's tasks include supporting educational programmes at various levels, including master's and doctoral studies focused on innovation and entrepreneurship.
The EIT also invests in start-ups and small businesses: it provides them with financial and mentoring support to effectively commercialise innovative ideas.
The European Institute of Innovation & Technology was established in 2008 as part of an initiative to increase Europe's international competitiveness by combining three key elements: education, research and business.
Professor Jemielniak reports that he is the third person from Poland in history to hold this position.
