At the end of 2012, more than 2.4 million active names were registered in the Polish national domain .pl. In terms of the number of country domain names, Poland is sixth in the European Union, reported the representatives of NASK research institute.
"In 2012, more than 1 million new names were registered in the domain .pl, which was the second highest score in the history of Polish registry" - reported NASK representatives in the release sent to PAP and noted that the only better year was 2011. These conclusions result from the publication "The .pl domain market. Detailed NASK report for the fourth quarter 2012".
In terms of the number of active country domain names, Poland with over 2.4 million names at the end of 2012 was sixth in the European Union. Germany, which has the first place, is very far ahead: more than 15 million names are registered in.de domain, more than 6 times more than the Polish domain. Our country is catching up with France (4th place with over 2.5 million names) and Italy (5th place with 2.48 million names). It turns out, however, that we are far ahead of Spain, which took seventh place with more than 1.6 million .es domain names.
The .pl domain registry contains names are registered on two levels: directly in the .pl domain and in lower level domains: functional (e.g. com.pl, net.pl, edu.pl) and regional domains (e.g. waw.pl, wroclaw.pl). Of all the names active in the DNS the end of 2012, 68 percent names were registered directly in .pl domain, 21 percent in the functional domains and the remaining 11 percent in regional domains.
According to experts, the first quarter of 2012 was the best in the history of the registry in terms of the number of new names in .pl domain. "After dynamic growth in the beginning of the year, when a record number of nearly 3.5 thousand names per day was registered, we observed stabilization and steady development of the market, which is a similar trend as in the previous year - said Michał Chrzanowski, director of NASK. - 2012, however, was particular due to the completion of the implementation of DNSSEC. It was a very important and complicated project, entirely carried out by NASK engineers and financed with the Institute’s own funds. We welcome the growing popularity of this solution. We hope that it will cover as many domains as possible and significantly improve the security of Internet users".
The NASK data show that the highest number of .pl domain names are registered in Mazowieckie (24.34 percent), Silesia (11.09 percent) and Wielkopolska (9.16 percent).
A curious fact reported by NASK is that in late 2012, the average number of characters used in .pl domain names was 10. Most common were the 8-character names (more than 200 thousand in the registry). 8 names in .pl domain had the maximum number of characters: 63.
