Prof. Bela Bollobas received honorary doctorate from Adam Mickiewicz University in Poznań

Hungarian mathematician, Prof. Bela Bollobas, specialist in the field of combinatorics and the theory of random structures, received an honorary doctorate from Adam Mickiewicz University in Poznań.

"The professor is a great mathematician, a man of enormous talent and knowledge, teacher of many students and our devoted friend. (...) The work of the few mathematicians in the world has such a strong impact and affects such a large group of researchers, not only mathematicians but also physicists and computer scientists" - Prof. Michał Karoński said in a eulogy.

Poznań University honoured Prof. Bollobas for impressive academic achievements, the undisputed authority in the field of combinatorics and other branches of discrete mathematics (including cryptography, game theory, graph theory, number theory), but also for the impact on the development of Poznań mathematical community and cooperation with the university.

"You fully deserve this modest, yet greatest honour my alma mater can award you" - Prof. Karoński addressed the scientist.

Adam Mickiewicz University Senate has made the decision to grant honorary doctorate at the request of the Council of the Faculty of Mathematics and Computer Science.

"I am very grateful and proud of it. This is a great honour for me. I would also like to thank you for the support and initiative to award me that title. Mathematics is very important to me, it is my life" - said Prof. Bollobas during the ceremony.

Professor Bollobas was born on August 3, 1943, in Budapest. In the early 1960s he began his studies at the Eötvös Loránd University in Budapest, during which he spend a year in Cambridge (Great Britain) on scholarship. In 1967 he received his doctorate in discrete geometry. Five years later, he received a second Ph.D. this time in functional analysis. Since 1970 he has been a Fellow of Trinity College at Cambridge University .

His scientific achievements consists of almost 440 scientific publications, including monographs. Over the course of his career he has promoted more than 40 doctors.

Prof. Bela Bollobas is 130th laureate given an honorary doctorate of theAdam Mickiewicz University.
