If there are no extreme weather events in the near future, in the second half of July, 10 young golden eagles that live in the Polish Carpathians will leave the nests - said Marian Stój from the Eagle Conservation Committee.
"This year’s broods are better than in the last two years, when in 2012 seven eagles left their nests, and a year later six eagles. However, they are a little weaker than in 2011, when 16 young eagles left their nests" - ornithologist told PAP.
He added that two nests with brood fell in the May during rains and violent storms, and in three cases the chicks died of soaking and hypothermia.
In Poland there are about 35 breeding pairs of golden eagles, most of them, more than 30 pairs, in the Carpathians. In addition to the Carpathians, they can be found in Masuria and on the Baltic coast.
Body length of golden eagle may exceed 80 cm, and its wingspan - 2 meters. In dive the bird reaches a top speed of 160 km/h.
This predator feeds mainly on medium-sized mammals, including hares, young deer, foxes, martens, marmots, hedgehogs, and even domestic cats. It also hunts birds, such as owls, buzzards, ravens, domestic poultry. It eats snakes and carrion.
Golden eagle nests in hard to reach places; in the crowns of tall trees or on the rocks.
