Scientists from Gdańsk and Wrocław have been given a patent for their special salt solutions, activated by plasma, which acquire bactericidal properties that can be used to protect plants against diseases.

The method, a constant current glow discharge at atmospheric pressure, activates the inorganic salt solutions flowing through the system.

This generates post-plasma solutions, which are bacteriostatic and bactericidal, depending on the organism on which they act.

According to the researchers, their device enables safe, effective and environmentally friendly elimination of bacteria.

The invention may find applications, for example, in the production of vegetables and seeds, or the protection of agricultural and horticultural crops.

The Patent Office of the Republic of Poland issued a decision on granting a patent for the invention called 'The method of eradication of bacterial phytopathogens’.

Earlier this year, the method was awarded in the '“EUREKA! DGP - WE DISCOVER POLISH INVENTIONS' competition.

Gdańsk researchers from the Intercollegiate Faculty of Biotechnology of the University of Gdańsk and the Medical University of Gdańsk who worked on creating the device, were: Professor Ewa Łojkowska, Dr. Agata Motyka-Pomagruk, Dr. Wojciech Śledź and Weronika Babińska.

At the Wrocław University of Science and Technology, the idea was developed by: Professor Paweł Pohl, Professor Piotr Jamróz, Dr. Anna Dzimitrowicz.

This is the third decision this year to grant a patent for an invention to the Research and Implementation Laboratory team of the Intercollegiate Faculty of Biotechnology of the University of Gdańsk and the Medical University of Gdańsk.
