Students from the Faculty of Physics of the University of Warsaw have won a gold medal in the University Physics Competition 2022.
Pitting themselves against 417 teams from research centres around the world, the students also won five silver and two bronze medals.
The University Physics Competition is for undergraduate students whose competing teams prepare a scientific paper on one of two assigned topics. They have only 48 hours to solve the problem, run the simulation, write the paper and send it to the organizers.
The competition was held on November 4-6, 2022, and the results were announced on January 17, 2023.
The first of this year's competition problems - 'Deflecting an Asteroid' - concerned an asteroid approaching the Earth. Teams had to calculate at which point a spacecraft positioned in low Earth orbit would have to collide with the asteroid to prevent its catastrophic collision with our planet. The gold-wining team consisted of Jan Dobrakowski, Wojciech Śmiałek and Ignacy Stachura.
Students from the University of Warsaw have been taking part in the University Physics Competition for the seven years.
The preparation and participation of the students was financed by the Faculty of Physics of the University of Warsaw.
