A large bronze bracelet believed to date back to the 8th–9th century BCE has been found in forests in Kociewie, northern Poland.
According to a statement posted by the Kociewie Searchers Association on social media, the find was made by one of their members after detecting a strong signal just 20 centimetres below the surface.
“He found a powerful signal, dug a small hole and was speechless (...). A large bronze bracelet appeared in the hole. After extracting and securing it, it turned out that the weight of the find was 267 grams,” the group wrote.
Cezary Modrzejewski, the search leader for Kociewie Searchers, told the Polish Press Agency that the bracelet was circular, slightly flattened, and very well preserved.
The team continued the search in the area over five weekends.
“The next day, we added two more fibulae and a piece of different jewellery to our finds,” the group said.
Marcin Tymiński, spokesman for the Pomeranian Provincial Conservator of Monuments, confirmed that the bracelet was handed over to the office and likely dates to the Late Bronze Age.
The artefact is expected to undergo further examination and conservation before being placed in the collection of the Archaeological Museum in Gdańsk. (PAP)
