Four young Poles on the Road to Harvard

Two high school girls and two students won the competition "The Road to Harvard", addressed to those who wish to study at prestigious American universities. In late September and October, the winners will fly to Boston for one week.

Marta Czuryło, Laura Deryng, Norbert Kuder and Mateusz Poreda will go to the United States. There, they will have the opportunity to meet with faculty and students at Harvard University, read the terms of recruitment and education, and take part in the ongoing lectures.

Unusual interests, achievements and passions of the winners amazed the competition jury, composed of Polish graduates of Harvard University.

The first of the winners - Marta Czuryło - is a student at Jakub Jasienica High School in Wrocław. She combines success in science with painting, music, theatre, cinema, debating and volunteering. She is a member of Mensa and winner of the Prime Minister scholarship. Through work at the Youth House of Culture and other institutions she actively supports cultural development of her city and shares her already considerable experience and knowledge with others.

Laura Deryng studies at High School No. 3 in Gdynia (with international final exams), where is the female basketball team captain. Her fascination with biology, mathematics, history and Polish language brought her several awards and prizes in competitions. In the future she wants to become a doctor. She is involved in charity and fundraising for hospices and charities.

Another winner is Norbert Kuder, the best Polish student of engineering and technology in 2011. Graduate of AGH University of Science and Technology in Kraków, he currently studies at Cranfield University in the UK. He is a leader in many student projects, including building a 3D printer. He dreams of a doctoral project, in which he could focus on the use of bone structures in engineering.

Warsaw School of Economics student Mateusz Poreda combines business and arts with passion. In the future he wants to be an producer of ambitious Hollywood films, he dreams of introducing a new quality to the Polish film industry. He has already gained experience in one of the Polish film studios, as well as a new international company that introduces new forms of music distribution. He is also the author of recently published book "Folwark warszawski" ("Warsaw Farm").

"The Road to Harvard" is a competition for secondary and high school students, as well as students and graduates of public and private universities who wish to study at American universities, especially at Harvard University. The main prize is a one-week trip of four winners to the U.S. with a visit to Harvard University. In addition, all winners will be covered by the mentoring program, which will give them access to the knowledge and experience of Polish graduates of Harvard University.

"The goal of our initiative is to spread the idea of studying at the world’s top universities among young Poles and making them realise that their dreams can come true. We are proud to help these talented, ambitious people take their first steps on the road to Harvard" - said Krzysztof Daniewski, president of the Harvard Club of Poland.
