The 30th edition of Shell Eco-marathon took place on a street circuit in Rotterdam, the Netherlands. The event attracted more than 3 thousand students from nearly 200 teams representing 27 countries. Their task was to design , build and test energy efficient vehicles. The winning teem covered the longest distance on an of one litre of fuel.
Best in the category of vehicles that in terms of size and functionality resemble cars moving on urban roads, the "Urban Concept" category, were students of French Louis Delage high school. They drove 468.85 km on one litre of fuel. Second place went to the team from the Vehicle Aerodynamics Student Club at Warsaw University of Technology. Their car PAKS improved last year\'s score of 334.2 to 376.46 kilometres traveled on one litre of gasoline. Third place went to the Belgian team from the University of Mons with the result of 189.08 km/1 litre.
French team Also won in the second competition category, "Prototype". The team from Saint-Joseph La Joliverie high school improved their last year\'s result by 11 percent, to 3 314.9 km on one litre of fuel. In this category, Poles also improved their results compared to those obtained in the previous edition. Team Smart Power from Silesian University of Technology drove over 30 km more on 1 kWh (487 km compared to 454.5 km last year).
According to the competition rules, for a few days (15-18 May), the teams have been trying to travel the longest possible route on an equivalent of one litre of fuel. Cars they designed and manufactured performed a fixed number of laps around the track at a constant speed, and the organizers calculated the energy efficiency of each vehicle. Prizes were awarded to teams that travelled the greatest distance on an equivalent of one litre of fuel or one kilowatt-hour.
Shell Eco-marathon is held every year in Europe, the U.S. and Asia.
