As many as 27.8 percent of Poles did not use the Internet in 2018, according to a new survey.

Carried out every five years by the Polish Panel Survey POLPAN, which has been conducted continuously for 33 years, the survey asked, among other things, about internet usage and new technologies.

In the 35-44 age group, as many as 21.2 percent respondents did not use the Internet. A similar percentage of people with secondary education do not want to or cannot use the Internet. In 2018, 80.2 percent of people with primary education did not use the Internet.

Anna Turner from the Institute of Philosophy and Sociology PAS said: “One thing did not change between 2003 and 2018: the digitally excluded people, are still people with the lowest education and the oldest people, around and over the age of 76. In this age group, 97 percent did not use the the Internet in 2003, and 80percent in 2018.”

She added: “In 2003, 96.4 percent of farmers did not use the Internet. In 2018, it was still 60 percent.

“The place of residence no longer makes a difference in access to the Internet, so for farmers it must be a question of not willing to use the Internet.”

The biggest jump in Internet use can be seen in the youngest group of respondents, aged 18-24. In 2003, 31 percent of this group did not use the Internet, and in 2018 it was only 0.4 percent.
