Nearly 500 eminent scientists from around the world will participate in an international conference that will summarise the results of research conducted at CERN and other European particle physics and astrophysics centres. It will take place on 10 - 12 September in Kraków.

The conference "CERN Council Open Symposium on European Strategy for Particle Physics" is organized by the AGH University of Science and Technology and the Institute of Nuclear Physics PAS under the aegis of the European Strategy Preparatory Group.

The centres in Kraków have been selected to organize the prestigious symposium in a competition resolved by the CERN. "This symposium will be one of the most important events in the world of the physical sciences in recent years. It is a huge success and honour for Polish scientific community" - said the AGH spokesman Bartosz Dembiński.

The symposium sessions will be attended by nearly 500 eminent scientists from around the world (including the CERN Council President Michael Spiro, director of CERN Rolf Heuer and his deputies Sergio Bertolucci and Steve Myers). They will summarize the results of research conducted at CERN and other European particle physics and astrophysics centres.

According to the AGH spokesman, the main objective of the conference will be updating the European Strategy for Particle Physics. The Council adopted the current strategy in July 2006 with an understanding that it be brought up to date at appropriate intervals of typically five years.

Regular CERN contributors include about 260 Polish scientists, of which over 100 are associated with Krakow: mainly AGH, the Institute of Nuclear Physics PAS and the Jagiellonian University. Almost 90 Poles are directly employed at CERN. Among them, many are physicists, but also experts in the field of computer science, electronics, mechanics, accelerator technology, and many other fields of engineering.
