Professor Piotr Ponikowski remains the most frequently cited Polish scientist according to the latest Highly Cited Researchers Top 1 percent ranking. This year's list of world's most frequently cited researchers includes six Polish scientists, only two of them in the field of medical sciences.

According to the Wroclaw Medical University website, the rector of the university, cardiologist Professor Ponikowski is the only representative of Polish science to be included in the ranking for the ninth time, continuously since 2015.

"Clarivate's Highly Cited Researcher ranking identifies individual researchers in science and social sciences who have demonstrated a significant impact in their field of research. Each of them has authored numerous, highly cited articles that rank in the top 1 percent of citations in their field and year of publication in Web of Science over the last decade,’ the university said.

Six scientists from Poland are included in the 2023 HCR Top 1 percent ranking. In addition to Professor Ponikowski, these are: Professor Jacek Namieśnik (Gdańsk University of Technology), Dr. Atanas G. Atanasov (PAS), Professor Piotr Rutkowski (Maria Sklodowska-Curie National Research Institute of Oncology), Professor Andrzej Cichocki (PAS), Dr. Grzegorz Boczkaj (Gdańsk University of Technology).

Last year, five Polish scientists were included in the ranking. In the years 2014-2023, a total of 16 scientists from Poland were in the HCR Top 1 percent (4-6 researchers per year). This year's list can be found here.

'Professor Piotr Ponikowski has been included in this prestigious ranking for the ninth time in a row. He is the only scientist from Poland who has been listed continuously since 2015. From 2021, the Wroclaw Medical University is the only Polish medical university that has a representative in this ranking, and the only university in Wrocław,’ the university said.
