Natural hygiene cosmetics produced with waste from wine production are being developed by the Łukasiewicz - Institute of Heavy Organic Synthesis 'Blachownia' in cooperation with Onlybio.life S.A.

Researchers at the institute found that raw materials obtained from grape pomace contain large amounts of valuable bioactive substances. The possibility of reusing them is limited by the amount of generated waste and the need to dispose of it.

The research assumptions and goals of the project are consistent with the principles of sustainable production and minimizing the negative impact of human activity on the environment. Economic aspects are taken into account in the work carried out in the project. The cosmetics industry is looking for innovative solutions in an acceptable price range. New cosmetics should contain relatively high concentrations of bioactive substances, without significantly increasing the price of the cosmetic mass.

Creating a line of new cosmetics using grape pomace from Polish vineyards was proposed by Professor Tomasz Wasilewski and Dr. Zofia Hordyjewicz-Baran, who specialises in obtaining and analysing extracts from plant material. Together, they developed a cosmetics production process involving Chemical Loan Extraction. For over eight years, Professor Tomasz Wasilewski has been cooperating with Onlybio.life S.A. where he develops new cosmetics, introduces them to the market and conducts development projects (for the last 3.5 years as the R&D director).

Potential recipients of the project results entitled: 'Functional and safe natural hygiene cosmetics produced on the basis of waste material (pomace) from Polish vineyards' can be cosmetic companies in Poland and abroad that are looking for innovative solutions.

One company to sign a cooperation agreement is Onlybio.life which already uses only natural ingredients from organic farming or recycling in its products.

In addition, a team of scientists led by Professor Tomasz Wasilewski and Dr. Zofia Hordyjewicz-Baran has already completed an application project with InventionBio regarding a new generation of detergents intended for washing fruit and vegetables. These detergents remove pesticide residues.

The Foundation for Polish Science selected 28 projects for financing in the Proof of Concept FENG competition. Two of them were submitted by scientists from the Łukasiewicz Research Network.

The project will be financed by the Foundation for Polish Science as part of the Proof of Concept FENG competition.
