Professor Piotr Sankowski, director of the IDEAS Research Institute, has been selected to join a global scientific panel on artificial intelligence established by the United Nations, the institute announced.

Professor Sankowski is the only Pole among 40 global authorities appointed to the body, which will independently assess the impact of emerging AI technologies on the global economy and society.

UN Secretary-General António Guterres announced the creation of the Independent International Scientific Panel on Artificial Intelligence during a press conference in New York on February 4. He said the UN had selected 40 experts from more than 2,600 candidates worldwide.

The panel’s members specialize in fields including machine learning, cybersecurity, human rights and data governance. They will serve in their personal capacity, independent of any government, company or institution.

“No country can see the full picture alone. We need shared understandings to build effective guardrails, unlock innovation for the common good, and foster cooperation. The Panel will help the world separate fact from fakes, and science from slop. It will provide an authoritative reference point at a moment when reliable, unbiased understanding of AI has never been more critical,” the UN Secretary-General said at the conference.

He added that the panel is expected to submit its first report in July, to coincide with the global AI for Good summit in Geneva.

“This is a tremendous honor, but above all, a significant commitment. I have been appointed to the United Nations' International Independent Scientific Panel on AI. The Panel has been mandated to work on evidence-based scientific assessments related to the opportunities, risks and impacts of artificial intelligence. We have a lot of work ahead of us. I am very much looking forward to collaborating with leading experts from around the world,” Sankowski wrote on social media.

According to the UN website, the panel is “the first global scientific body on Artificial Intelligence (AI), bringing together leading experts to assess how AI is transforming our lives”.

The Independent International Scientific Panel on Artificial Intelligence was established by UN General Assembly Resolution A/RES/79/325 on August 26, 2025, in line with commitments made under the Pact for the Future adopted at the 2024 Summit of the Future. The pact is described as “designed to make the international system more inclusive, effective and fit for 21st-century challenges.” (PAP)
