A Polish team is developing a key software component of a European system that will give EU member states independent access to satellite data for defence purposes.

The Polish and Spanish branches of technology company GMV are working on an end-to-end simulator for the European Earth Observation Governmental Service (EOGS), the European Commission’s planned core system for providing countries with independent access to Earth observation data.

The €1 million contract is being carried out under the European Resilience from Space for Earth Observation Programme (ERS-EO), a new initiative of the European Space Agency (ESA). Poland is making the largest contribution to the programme among all ESA member states.

The simulator will support the design, construction and deployment of EOGS by providing an environment for assessing its operational performance and developing its target architecture. It will allow different operational strategies to be tested, service levels and key performance indicators to be analysed, and future system configurations evaluated.

The different variants will be assessed against real-world operational constraints and the range of national, commercial and European assets that could be involved.

The simulator will be developed through successive, increasingly advanced versions, allowing it to be gradually validated and used by ESA to support the system’s architectural and definition work.

Polish engineers will develop and integrate individual software modules before testing the system to ensure that it operates correctly and meets established requirements. They will also create a prototype of the future simulator, train users and prepare them to run simulations and carry out analyses.

“The involvement of specialists from Poland demonstrates that the knowledge and skills we are developing can be applied to creating solutions of strategic importance for Europe. It is also a significant project for the development of the domestic space sector and its participation in international missions,” said Paweł Wojtkiewicz, Director for Space Sector at GMV in Poland, in a company press release.

ERS-EO is a joint European Space Agency and European Commission programme aimed at preparing and accelerating the development of European technologies for government-led Earth observation. It involves developing key components of the future system and integrating European initiatives using Earth observation data for both civilian and defence purposes. (PAP)
