Seven Polish teams will start in the 34th edition of Shell Eco-marathon 2018 on 5-8 July in London. The task of the participants will be to drive the longest possible distance on the equivalent of one litre of fuel, and in the case of electric vehicles - 1 kWh.
Competitors participating in Shell Eco-marathon 2018 will face the challenge whose traditions date back to 1985. The rivalry takes place in two categories: Prototype and UrbanConcept.
During this year`s Shell Eco-marathon, 175 teams from 24 countries in Europe and beyond will show their vehicle design and construction skills. Seven student teams from Poland are preparing for the competition.
SKAP 2 team from Warsaw University of Technology will return to London to present their innovative vehicle Orion in the UrbanConcept category, among gasoline-powered internal combustion vehicles. The Smart Power Urban team from the Silesian University of Technology will start with the hydrogen powered Eco Arrow 3.0. The following teams will compete in the Prototype category: Rotor from the State Higher Vocational School in Krosno and SKAP from Warsaw University of Technology with ethanol-powered vehicles and Iron Warriors from Lodz University of Technology with a petrol car. Hydrogen will power the cars built by Hydrogen CarPG team from Gdańsk University of Technology and Hydrogreen Pollub from Lublin University of Technology.
"Last year, we went to London to compete for the place on the podium in the Shell Eco-marathon as SKAP. We translated our ambitions into deeds and, despite various challenges, we were always able to get out of trouble (...) We work very well as a team, which definitely helps us work on our car. This year we are also hungry for victory and we can not wait for the competition" - says Janusz Popławski, a member of SKAP from Warsaw University of Technology.
The cars competing in the Prototype category are futuristic, streamlined three or four wheel vehicles. The basic principle in their design is to reduce friction and maximize their energy efficiency. The UrbanConcept category has been created for more conventional vehicles designed and built in accordance with road requirements and adapted to the needs of today`s drivers.
The 34th edition of Shell Eco-marathon will be the highlight of the Make the Future Live festival of ideas and innovations, which will take place on 5-8 July in Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park in London.
According to Norman Koch, global CEO of Make the Future, Shell Eco-marathon presents the best in science, technology, engineering and mathematics. It shows the high level of specialization in these fields that is needed to build extremely energy-efficient means of transport.
During last year`s edition of the competition, the French team Microjoule-La Joliverie drove 2503,9 km on one litre of fuel, which corresponds to a trip from London to Marseille and back. The competition will be fierce this year, because the teams are doing their best to build vehicles that will cover even greater distances.
This year`s Polish edition of Shell Eco-marathon was organised under the patronage of the Ministry of Enterprise and Technology and the Ministry of Science and Higher Education.
