Sip, Sip, Hooray! New Course to Offer Wine Lovers Master’s in Vineyard Management
If you’ve ever fancied the idea of running your own vineyard or winery, the University of Agriculture in Krakow could be just the place to start.
The university’s Faculty of Biotechnology and Horticulture is to begin a new course in Viticulture, a branch of horticulture dealing with the cultivation and harvesting of grapes. The viticulturist`s task is to select the right grape variety for the local conditions, set up and care for the vineyard: protect against diseases and pests, fertilize and irrigate the shrubs, cut and form them, monitor fruit development and determine the optimal harvest date. In turn, oenology focuses on the processing of grapes, the art of making grape wines, description of their properties, quality control and marketing.
The new course will prepare students to design, establish and run their own vineyard and winery. Students will learn how to assess the quality of grapes, musts and finished wines. The course program also includes the impact of biologically active substances on human and animal organisms, as well as possible toxic effects and drug interactions. Thanks to the expanded knowledge of neuroenology, sensory analysis and food-pairing, graduates will be able to provide advice as sommeliers when choosing wines in HoReCa, oenotourism, wine sales and distribution.
The lecture subjects include: viticulture, vine diseases and pests, viticulture microbiology, vinification, laboratory analysis in oenology, wine chemistry, active substances in natural products, health aspects of wine, drug interactions with ethanol and neuroenology. During the classes at the university vineyard and winery, students will learn about all stages of wine production "from field to table." It will be complemented by study trips to production vineyards in Poland and abroad, where students will learn about the problems of winemaking in various production areas.
The course will take 3 semesters (1.5 years) and will end with a thesis defence and a master`s examination. It is organized as part of the "Integrated university development" project co-financed by the Operational Program Knowledge Education Development.
