Since the beginning of the Russian invasion of Ukraine, Polish universities have accepted 123 students - refugees from Ukraine for studies or continuation of studies, according to the data provided to PAP by Ministry of Education and Science. Nearly 2,800 people expressed interest in being accepted as students.
The Russian invasion of Ukraine began on February 24. Since that day, over 2,57 million people entered Poland according to the Polish Border Guard data. Last week, Deputy Minister of Interior and Administration and Plenipotentiary of the Government for War Refugees from Ukraine Paweł Szefernaker reported that according to estimates, there are about 1.5 million refugees from Ukraine in Poland. 96 percent of them are women and children.
The refugees are also university candidates and students who want start or continue their studies in Poland. According to the data provided to PAP the spokesperson of the Ministry of Education and Science, Adrianna Całus, Polish universities have accepted 123 refugees from Ukraine for studies or continuation of studies. 489 refugees are currently during the recruitment procedure. Nearly 2,800 people from Ukraine who are now in Poland have expressed interest in being accepted as students.
Całus reminded that the Minister of Education and Science commissioned the National Agency for Academic Exchange to launch the Solidarity with Ukraine programme. Within its framework, selected universities, institutes of the Polish Academy of Sciences, the Research Network Łukasiewicz and research institutes will offer Ukrainian refugees - students and doctoral candidate who have arrived in Poland not earlier than on February 24 this year an opportunity to continue their studies free of charge. This will include the possibility of working on a doctoral dissertation and other forms of education, including Polish language courses - from March to September 2022.
The programme is a joint initiative of the Minister of Education and Science and the Minister of Health. Its total budget of PLN 25.7 million will allow to finance approx. 1320 participants. The funds will cover the costs of education and scholarships in the amount of PLN 1,500 per month. The data provided by the spokesperson of the Ministry of Education and Science show that the recruitment in the programme concluded on April 4. Applications for project financing were submitted by 98 organisations - universities, institutes of the Polish Academy of Sciences and research institutes (including 6 universities supervised by the Minister of Health).
