Black storks’ departures to wintering places in Africa will continue until the end of September. The route of flight runs through Podkarpacie, according to ornithologist Marian Stój.

"Departures began in the second week of September, about two weeks after the departure of white storks. Black storks fly in smaller flocks than white. They travel to the north-eastern and eastern Africa" - said Stój.

Black storks are a little smaller than their white cousins. They nest in older forests, in the Carpathians often in beech forests, near rivers, streams and ponds. They feed mainly on fish.

"Although they depart later than white storks, they will come back to Poland a little earlier. They will be in their nests already in the second half of March" - said the naturalist.

Black storks have black backs, wings, head and neck, white belly, and red legs and beak. They are more skittish than white storks, and there are far fewer of them, 1100 to 1200 pairs live in Poland.
