Young Scientist Medal for Michał Grąt

Dr. Michał Grąt from the Medical University of Warsaw received the Young Scientist Medal at the Warsaw University of Technology. The distinction has been awarded in recognition of the development of new qualification criteria for liver transplantation and introducing them to clinical practice as the Warsaw Criteria.
The Young Scientist Medal established by the Warsaw University of Technology in 2007 is awarded for outstanding and recognized achievements in the field of science and technical innovation and other outstanding creative achievements. The idea behind the distinction is to promote the achievements of young scientists characterized by independence of creative concepts and special dynamics of development. The medal is awarded to people under 35.
Dr. Michał Grąt from the Department of General, Transplant and Liver Surgery of the Medical University of Warsaw is a graduate of the Medical University of Warsaw. He graduated from the 1st Faculty of Medicine in 2012. He became a doctor of medical sciences a year later - in 2013, his doctoral thesis concerned the link between the concentration of alpha fetoprotein and the risk of recurrence of hepatocellular carcinoma in patients after liver transplantation.
Three years later, in April 2016, he obtained postdoctoral degree in medical science. Since 2012 he has been an active member of the department`s transplant team, and since 2016 - an independent operator of liver retrieval from deceased donors. As an operator of liver retrieval from deceased donor, he participated in the first simultaneous lung and heart transplantation in Poland. He also performed one of the first ALPPS (Associate Liver Partition with Portal vein ligation for Staged hepatectomy) liver surgeries in Poland. In 2018 he obtained funding and became project leader in the SONATA competition. The thematic scope of the project includes finding the optimal technique for closing abdominal integuments after cancer surgery.
Dr. Michał Grąt is an award-winning and distinguished author or co-author of 62 scientific papers. His achievements include Scholarship of the Minister of Health, "Wacław Mayzel Medical Laurel" of the Polish Academy of Sciences, the Polish Medical Society Award, Final Prize in the "Polityka Science Awards" of the weekly Polityka, Final Award in the Supertalnet competition of "Puls Medycyny", START scholarship of the Foundation for Polish Science, International Liver Transplantation Society Travel Award and numerous Medical University of Warsaw Rector`s awards.
State decorations were also presented during this week`s ceremony at Warsaw University of Technology: 2 Golden Crosses of Merit, 4 Silver Crosses of Merit, 9 Bronze Crosses of Merit and 33 Golden Medals for Long Service, 17 Silver Medals for Long Service and 27 Bronze Medals for Long Service. Beata Dobrzeniecka from the Faculty of Mechatronics of the Warsaw University of Technology received the distinction "Merited for the Warsaw University of Technology". It is awarded to long-term employees of the Warsaw University of Technology and other people who have contributed to the development of the university, or raising its reputation.
