PLN 80 million from the Ministry of Science for research projects of humanists

The Ministry of Science and Higher Education has allocated PLN 80 million to funding of research projects under the National Programme for the Development of Humanities. So far, humanists received nearly PLN 200 million from the programme, reported the Ministry of Science.

This is the third edition of the National Programme for the Development of Humanities competitions. They are addressed to scientists doing documentary, editorial and research work of key importance for heritage and culture, Polish and foreign scientists carrying out research projects in interdisciplinary and and inter-community cooperation; the third competition is open to young humanists.

According to the Ministry of Science, in this year’s edition of the National Programme for the Development of Humanities new solutions have been introduced that will facilitate applying for research funding.

One of the changes in the module supporting young humanists is the principle that anyone who starts the Ph.D. program may apply for funding in the programme and become the project manager. Moreover, the maximum amount of indirect costs (e.g., access to databases, technical support, accounting) has been increased to 20 percent (previously 10 percent).

"Each doctoral student can apply for a grant to fund his research project carried out in the framework of the National Programme for the Development of Humanities. I hope that the introduction of this principle will encourage many young researchers to apply for grants" - said the Minister of Science and Higher Education prof. Barbara Kudrycka.

The Minister referred to the announcement the next edition of the National Programme for the Development of Humanities competitions in her blog at NaTemat.pl. "I often hear the opinion that while the Ministry of Science quite effectively supports scholars specialising in life sciences, informatics and technology, so called bio-info-techno sector, Polish humanists are neglected and simply do not have funds for their research. I am of a different opinion" - wrote Kudrycka.

The Ministry also announced that soon a Programme competition will soon be announced in the module disseminating the results of Polish humanities research in the world.

National Programme for the Development of Humanities was established on 5 November 2010. The programme is not the only support for researchers in the humanities. Research conducted by humanists and post-doctoral internships are also subsidizes by the National Science Centre. According to the Ministry of Science, in 2012 the National Science Centre awarded around 147 million to projects in the group of humanities, social sciences and arts.
