Students expelled from Belarusian universities for protesting against the country’s recent presidential elections are being offered scholarships to study in Poland.
The University of Warsaw has launched a recruitment drive for its Konstanty Kalinowski Scholarship Programme of the Polish Government, as well as one-year training internships.
Rector Professor Marcin Pałys said: “Our academic community supports everyone who wants a free, democratic, civic and law-abiding Belarus.
“We want to express our appreciation and our solidarity. You set an example to follow.
“The task of universities, including the University of Warsaw, is primarily science and teaching. Therefore, in this area, the university will continue and expand the activities to support those harmed by the actions of the Belarusian authorities.”
The University added: “In connection with the current situation in Belarus and the expected increase in the number of repressed people, it was decided to launch additional recruitment.”
On Friday, Belarusian flags were displayed at the University of Warsaw in front of the Kazimierz Palace as a sign of solidarity with the Belarusian people.
The Centre for Belarusian Studies at the Centre for East European Studies of the University of Warsaw employs, among others, researchers dismissed from Belarusian universities for political reasons.
Professor Pałys said: “The University of Warsaw intends to invite more lecturers and researchers from Belarus to cooperate, should they face repressions.”
Recruitment will be begin on August 31, 2020. Applications will be accepted until the limit of places is reached.
