Four Polish student teams have registered to participate in the prestigious Mars rovers competition University Rover Challenge 2015. The competition will be held on 28-30 May, traditionally in the desert of Utah in the United States.

University Rover Challenge in Utah is a prestigious international competition of Mars rovers built by students. 31 teams from the United States, Canada, India, Bangladesh, Egypt and Poland signed up for the finals last year. This year, the organizers expect an even better turnout.

"Four Polish teams registered for the URC 2015: teams from Universities of Technology in Wrocław, Warsaw, Białystok and Rzeszów" - reported the Mars Society Polska on its website.

University Rover Challenge (URC) is held every year in late May and early June, in the desert of Utah in the United States, near the analogue of Martian base MDRS. Under extreme conditions, student teams from around the world and the Mars rovers built by them compete in four field competitions, simulating the Martian missions. Remotely controlled rovers have to climb terrain elevation, provide support for an injured astronaut, to make repairs in a malfunctioning device. Participants must also make presentations of their designs.

Teams from Polish universities participate in the competition since 2009. The first success of Polish students was in 2011, when the rover Magma2 built at Białystok University of Technology took the highest place on the podium. Students from Białystok University of Technology took first place again in 2013 and 2014 with rovers Hyperion and Hyperion 2. In 2013, the Scorpio3 team from Wrocław University of Technology took second place, and in 2014 the third place went to the team Legendary Rover of Rzeszów University of Technology.

In recognition of the achievements of Polish teams, the first European edition of the competition - European Rover Challenge - was organized in early September 2014 in Świętokrzyskie.
