Aptiv, the company that develops technologies for autonomous cars, signed a cooperation agreement with the Academic Computer Centre Cyfronet AGH. The supercomputer Prometheus owned by the Cyfronet will be used for research.

Minister of Entrepreneurship and Technology Jadwiga Emilewicz, who attended the signing ceremony, reminded that the long-term presence of Aptiv, and earlier its predecessor Delphi in Poland, gave grounds to say that the Polish economy was entering the path of the 4.0 revolution.

"This is a special time and moment because we are experiencing a revolution in the world of motoring (...). We are talking not only about electric cars, but also about autonomous vehicles, and Aptiv is a leading provider of solutions for such vehicles" - the minister noted.

According to Emilewicz, cooperation and agreement between Cyfronet AGH and Aptiv means, on the one hand, the possibility of further development of autonomous technology, and on the other - the prospects for development and good work for students and graduates of the AGH University of Science and Technology in Kraków.

"In this technology, the most important aspect is collecting a huge amount of data relating primarily to security, data processing and self-learning. This huge quantum of data will be tested and analysed by one of the largest supercomputers, Prometheus located at Cyfronet" - Emilewicz noted.

The development of electric and autonomous vehicles - the Minister of Entrepreneurship and Technology noted - is one of the important topics in Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki`s Strategy for Responsible Development.

As part of the cooperation, Cyfronet AGH will provide Aptiv with computing, data transfer, collocation and data storage and processing services.

Tomasz Miśniakiewicz, president of the Aptiv`s Krakow Tech Center, which employs over 2.5 thousand employees, reminded that cooperation with the AGH UST facility primarily involves processing and analysing huge amounts of data registered by autonomous vehicles during test drives.

"During a 100 km drive, a prototype autonomous car on average collects over 10 terabytes of data. This is a huge technological challenge. This is indeed big data area and the challenges associated with it" - he noted.

"I am glad that we have found a partner in Kraków that will support us in this project, that has world class technologies that allow working on autonomous vehicles" - added the representative of Aptiv.

Prof. Kazimierz Wiatr, director of Cyfronet AGH, said that thanks to the contract Cyfronet, the operator of the fastest supercomputer in Poland, would gain new competences resulting from the needs of modern industry. "This is a large-scale undertaking that will increase the quality of services provided for science by Cyfronet" - he said.

As part of the cooperation, 13 employees of the Tech Center also signed implementation PhD contracts, which will be carried out at AGH UST. They concern issues related to artificial intelligence and autonomous vehicles.

According to the Rector of AGH UST, Prof. Tadeusz Słomka, the contract concluded with Aptiv "is an important moment for the university, which may be the beginning of further, long-term cooperation." (PAP)
