Nearly 4.1 million zlotys for 15 winners of HOMING PLUS

7th edition of the HOMING PLUS programme of the Foundation for Polish Science has been decided. Fifteen winners who conduct Bio, Info and Techno research will receive a total of nearly 4.1 million zlotys to continue their academic careers in Poland.

The winners, the doctors who lived abroad for at least nine months and want to pursue a research career in Poland - may apply for a subsidy of up to PLN 80 thousand per year and a personal research stipend in the amount of PLN 5,000 per month. Research conducted by the winners will continue for one to two years.

Among the winners is Dr. Wojciech Solecki of the Institute of Pharmacology PAS in Kraków, who has received funding totalling to PLN 287 thousand for the project "Noradrenergic Regulation of the Motivation System".

"As part of my project, I will investigate whether the activity of noradrenergic neurons affects the formation of feelings of pleasure and discomfort. Important objective of the project is also to determine whether the activity of these neurons is associated with increased psychological discomfort associated with drug withdrawal syndrome" - explained Dr. Solecki, who had previously conducted research at Yale University in the United States.

Another laureate, Dr. Marcin Dziubiński of the Faculty of Mathematics, Informatics and Mechanics, University of Warsaw, has received more than PLN 228 thousand for the project "Strategic Network Resistance". "The subject of my project is the resistance and defence of networks, including communication, computer and telecommunications networks in the face of an attack of intelligent enemy. Issues of this kind are particularly interesting in recent years, when we are dealing with terrorist threats and cyber-terrorism. In study of this problem I will apply an approach based on game theory, where both the defender and the attacker are treated as two players with limited resources and opposing interests when it comes to network functionality. This approach, and considering the possibility of defending selected components of the network, are the innovative aspects of my project that will allow for better use of defensive resources" - said Dr. Dziubiński, who had conducted research at the University of Cambridge in the UK before returning to Poland.

Other researchers who have received funding for the implementation of innovative Bio, Info and Techno projects are: Dr. Tomasz Antosiewicz of New Technology Centre of the University of Warsaw, Dr. Alicja Bachmatiuk and Dr. Michał Kawalec the Centre of Polymer and Carbon Materials PAS in Zabrze, Dr. Sylwia Bobis-Wozowicz of the Faculty of Biochemistry, Biophysics and Biotechnology, Jagiellonian University, Dr. Humberto Fernandes and Dr Justyna McIntyre of the Institute of Biochemistry and Biophysics PAS in Warsaw, Dr. Anna Kajetanowicz from the Institute of Organic Chemistry PAS, Dr. Daniel Kikoła from the Faculty of Physics, Warsaw University of Technology, Dr. Piotr Kolenderski of the Faculty of Physics, Astronomy and Applied Computer Science, Nicolaus Copernicus University in Toruń, Dr. Radosław Michalski from the Faculty of Chemistry, Łódź University of Technology, Dr. Stanisław Andrzej Raczyński from the Faculty of Electronics, Telecommunications and Informatics, Gdańsk University of Technology, Dr. Zbigniew Rozynek from the Institute of Physical Chemistry PAS in Warsaw, and Dr. Monika Srebro from the Faculty of Chemistry of the Jagiellonian University.

The winning designs HOMING PLUS program in the field from the Bio, Info, Techno are co-financed by the European Union under the European Regional Development Fund.

The HOMING PLUS programme within the Bio, Info, Techno categories is co-financed with European Union funding from the European Regional Development Fund.

The call for applications in the 8th and final edition of the HOMING PLUS programme opened on August 14 and will continue until October 15. The 8th edition is addressed solely to the persons representing the Bio, Info, Techno categories.
