
Polish Academy of Sciences is the only Polish institution in the top 100 of the international SCImago ranking of the world’s best scientific institutions and universities. PAS in 98th in the category summarizing the scientific achievements accumulated in the Scopus database.
SCImago ranking (SIR) of the number and quality of publications of individual scientific institutions in the world is prepared by international SCImago Research Group. The latest SIR ranking covers the years 2007-2011.
Institutions and universities are grouped in four categories: academic achievements accumulated in Scopus (Output), international cooperation measured in publications the institutions prepared jointly with foreign institutes (International Collaboration), measure of the impact calculated as the ratio between the citations index of a given institution and the world average (Normalized Impact) and publications in 25 percent most prestigious journals (Q1 - High Quality Publications).
The rankings cover more than 2.8 thousand research institutes and universities. In the first, category podium places were taken by: National Centre for Scientific Research in France, Chinese Academy of Sciences, Russian Academy of Sciences. The Polish Academy of Sciences was ranked in the 98th place. Other Polish institutions have significantly lower positions: Jagiellonian University took 393rd place, and the University of Warsaw was 536th.
In the International Collaboration category, best three Polish institutions are: Nicolaus Copernicus Astronomical Center PAS, the Henryk Niewodniczański Institute of Nuclear Physics PAS and the Institute of Physics PAS. In the global ranking in this category, these institutions took 76th, 163rd and 192nd place.
National Centre for Nuclear Research, the Henryk Niewodniczański Institute of Nuclear Physics PAS and the Curie Institute in Warsaw are the best Polish units in the Normalized Impact category. In the international comparison in this category, NCBJ took 158th place, and two others the 166th place.
In the Q1 - High Quality Publications category, best unit in Poland was the Institute of Physical Chemistry PAS. Further places among Polish institutions took the Institute of Organic Chemistry PAS and Institute of Biochemistry and Biophysics PAS. However, in the world ranking in this category, Polish institutes were 732nd, 812th and 988th.
SCImago Institutions Rankings covers all the academic units in the world, which during the last year of the analyzed five-year period published at least 100 scientific papers recorded in the Scopus database. The database is maintained by Elsevier, one of the largest academic publishers in the world.
