Six Polish universities are in this year\'s edition of the QS World University Rankings. The first three places have been taken by universities in the United States. The winner is the famous Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Among Polish universities, the best is the University of Warsaw in the 366th place.
Ranking is published since 2004 by Quacquarelli Symonds, an organization dealing with issues of education at the tertiary level. The main aim of the ranking is to help study candidates make an informed decision and popularise the idea of studying outside home country. The ranking includes the best 4 percent universities in the world, including only six universities in Poland.
The first three places in the ranking went to US universities: Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), Stanford University and Harvard University. In the fourth place was the British University of Cambridge, and California Institute of Technology (Caltech) was fifth. The top ten also included: University of Oxford, University College London, ETH Zurich - Swiss Federal Institute of Technology, Imperial College London and the University of Chicago.
Six Polish universities are included in the ranking. In the highest, 366th place is the University of Warsaw. Jagiellonian University is in the ranking group 431-440, Warsaw University of Technology in the group 601-650, and Nicolaus Copernicus University in Toruń, University of Lodz and the University of Wroclaw in the 701+ group.
The following criteria are taken into account in the ranking: academic peer review (40 percent of total score), employer reputation (10 percent), faculty/student ratio (20 percent), citations per faculty based on Scopus (20 percent), international staff ratio (5 percent) and international student ratio (5 percent).
